Why is the rating system so weird/useless/pointless etc.?

Reviewing subjective things can get tricky since, by definition, it is not objective.

The lack of objective metrics means there will always be variance in how a product is perceived. Since it’s difficult to assign a concrete score a matter of taste, the rating systems are designed to hit a mark somewhere in the wide subjective spectrum. The ratings are not meant to be empirical.

I feel the value rating system does a good job to quantify some of the limited objective metrics during this process. Cost-to-quality comparisons are generally acceptable since the cost will be obvious and the overall “quality” of a product will not differ too drastically from palate to palate.

The second part of any tasting is pretty simple: is it yummy (to me)? Obviously some people prefer certain flavours and textures over others, but since the target is so wide it should be less likely to miss.

I will only review the product on its own merits. If modifications are necessary to make the product palpable (such as seasoning or further cooking), the product is automatically given a failing grade. Tasting accoutrements such as bread or crackers are serving suggestions from me, and do not factor into the final score.

Who are you?

I live in Vancouver, Canada. I am a self-described foodie (read: glutton) who loves trying new flavours and revisiting old ones. I eat, drink, cook, make merry to pass the time between high-stress jobs.

Apart from over-consumption, I also enjoy photography, coding, music, birding, board games, and antiquing.

Hey, eat this!

If you have a suggestion on something you’d like me to try, or you would like to send me a can of something to review, please shoot me an email: [email protected]. I will do my best to honour your request.

Why in Poseidon's name would you do this?

I love seafood. I see food, I eat food. Why not write about it?

I don’t have a set schedule on reviews but I try to do at least two or three a month.
